Fashion Do's of Plus Size Women's Coats

DO choose women’s outerwear that works with your body, not against it. Look for styles that skim your shape, instead of styles that hide it. Tapering, belts and darts are always a plus size woman’s friend. We recommend Roamans for this item.

DO shop for leather jackets in the plus size department. Regular leather coats may fit, but are usually too tight in the upper arm area. Be comfortable and choose a full figure style to maximize comfort and style, all at once. We recommend Jessica London for this item.

DO go for trendy coat styles, like the popular wool pea coat or trench (although both are fairly classic too). The traditional pea coat has an overlapping front, which is perfect for slimming the midsection by drawing attention to the buttons on the front of the coat. We recommend Metrostyle for this item.

DO stick with a solid color coats and blazers this winter season. While you may be tempted to splurge on that plaid coat you’ve been eyeing, it’s usually best for full figured women to stick to one solid color when it comes to outerwear. We recommend Coldwater Creek for this item.

DO think about buying a coat in a color other than black! While black is certainly slimming, the cut of the coat is more important than the color. For instance, if you buy a well-cut coat that accentuates your best bodily features, you could successfully get it in any color. It really wouldn’t matter what color it was, since the cut was perfect!. We recommend Avenue for this item.

Style Don'ts of Coats

DON'T choose a winter coat that hits you above the waist. Shorter coats can actually make your midsection look larger. If you’re under 5’5 it’s best to choose a cold weather coat that hits you directly on your waist or an inch below, to lengthen the look of your legs.

DON'T buy oversized trench or rain coats! Many women make the mistake of buying enormous rain coats that hang to their feet. Many designers create trendy rain coats that not only help you stay dry in wet weather, but also work to help you stay stylish. Look for one with a defined shape (hint: darting, belts and tapering are keys to shopping).

DON'T shop for anything but “petite” coats if you are under 5’4. If you are short and choose to buy a regularly length coat, you will almost always look submerged in the material, which is not a good thing.

DON’T buy men’s outerwear. For some reason many plus size women look toward the men’s department when buying winter wear. Even if you’re tempted to steal your husband’s coat because it is comfortable…don’t! Instead be sure to browse the plus size women’s department. Chances are you’re drawn to men’s outerwear because of the larger fit, but you can get better fits with ladies plus size designs.

DON’T succumb to the popular “puffy coat” style of outerwear. Unless you want to look 20 pounds heavier, don’t purchase a coat with massive layers of feathering inside. It’s possible to find a sleeker and slimmer coat that is just as warm. Just because a coat is fluffy doesn’t necessarily mean it’s more comfortable or any warmer than the next coat on the rack.
