Style Tips: Plus Size Women's Pants
|
 |
Classic Plus Size Trouser Pants |
Classic trouser pants are extremely flattering to most
plus size figures, and it's surprising how few women know that.
Women started wearing trousers in the 1960's, and the
daring women who took up wearing trousers earlier than
that (Katherine Hepburn is one shining example), were
wearing men's clothes because pants weren't being designed
for women. Modern women's trousers may err on the side of curves: avoid pants
that curve into the waist or out to the hips: they are not
true trousers. Classic trouser pants are perfect for work.
They are made in tweed, wool, gabardine, flannel or linen
blends; fabrics that take well to tailored styles and that
resist wrinkling. Plus size women should look for trousers
that create a long, smooth silhouette.

Plus Size Women's Jeans |
Young women started wearing jeans as a fashion statement in the '50's, and ten
years later, everyone under the age of thirty was wearing
jeans. The classic pair of jeans sits just below the waist (called mid-rise jean)
and falls in a straight line from waist hem until past the
hip. After that, it's anyone's guess: bootcut jeans are
straight and tight at the calf, flared legs go in and out of
fashion. For plus size women, finding a comfortable pair of
jeans that also looks stylish can be a challenge. Look for
jeans that aren't overstyled: ignore trends like embroidery,
extra pockets, extreme fading and fancy stitching. Brass rivets are classic;
button flies add a touch of fun. Go for solid, old-fashioned
dark wash denim jeans that are perfect worn with tank
tops, t-shirts or sweaters.

Dressy Black Pants |
A pair of black dress pants are a must-have in any wardrobe,
Classic black, straigt leg or wide leg, dress
pants can go with nearly any top, so you can dress them up
or down, serious or playful. You can wear them with
virtually any type of shoe, so if you want to go clubbing
after work, you can swap out the low heels for a pair of skinny high heels and get right to the party. Black dress pants
should fit in a long, flowing line. Nothing should be tight
or overemphasized: they are a backdrop for the rest of your
outfit. They may flare out slightly at the bottom, but only
slightly, or you will give offense to the fashion gods. Look
for black pants in dressy fabrics; silk, velvet, linned wool
moleskin or jersey.

Crop, Short or Capris Pants |
Crop or Capri pants are the perfect summer or spring item for the mall
or beach. There are two mistakes women make with wearing
Capri's: they opt for baggy ones in the wrong length; or
they wear the wrong footwear. Cropped pant manufacturers
don't make it easy to choose the right pants: they come in
all lengths. Fashion experts say that the right length for a
Capri pant is either just above the ankle (one to two
inches) or just at the curve below the knee. If your pants
end in one of these two places, the curve of your leg
provides the shape and the charm needed to carry off plus size cropped
pants. Otherwise, your legs will look shapeless. Wearing the
right shoes is also vital for correct visual balance. Ballet
flats, sandals or flip-flops are light enough visually and
casual enough to work with cropped pants.

Plus Size Khaki/Neutral Pants |
Khaki pants have liberated more women from the casual
business wear conundrum than any other item of clothing under
the sun. Khakis were once the province of men's wear, but
designers have been making great looking khakis for plus size women for
more than a decade. The essence of khaki pants is the fabric:
it should be medium weight. If khakis are too light in the
fabric, they lose their shape and the tailored look that
defines them. Too heavy, and you wind up with something
closer to corduroy, which feels heavy when you move. True
khakis are made of cotton twill. You will find stretch khakis
in the plus size stores, and occasionally a pair will fit,
but oftentimes stretch twill fits in all the wrong places,
making it uncomfortable to wear the clothing. Avoid stretch
twill khakis if when you try them on, you find they pull at
the knee, the waist or the hip. Try non-stretch fabrics in a
larger size for a better fit. Khakis look great with polo
shirts, Oxford pinstripes and other tailored tops.

Linen or Natural Fiber Pants |
Nothing looks as nice as a pair of linen pants: something
about the textured, nubbly weave makes people want to put
their hand on linen. That may be the main reason we all still
love it: after all, linen wrinkles, it's expensive, and it's
harder and harder to find great quality linen, because its
production process is complicated compared to that of linen
or silk. All that said, a nice fitting pair of linen pants is
worth its weight in gold! Look for trousers: they are harder
to find, but you can wear them with impunity to work, on
dates or anywhere else. You'll see plenty of summer Capri
pants in linen, and they are fine, but for a year-long love
affair with linen, you need classic pants with great
tailoring and an excellent drape. Linen needs a well-tailored
line or it becomes shapeless and baggy. Look for lined pants
with good stitching on the seams and hems, slashed pockets
and the trouser styling. Linen is the one fabric you can wear
in white after Labor Day. See more linen pants >>

Plus Size Exercise Yoga Pants |
Yoga pants have become a fashion must, and they aren't just
for yoga anymore. You will see them on Saturdays at the
grocery store; paired with flip-flops at the local
coffeehouse, or strolling to the beach on a cool day. There
is something about the fit of yoga pants that makes them more
appealing than the old-fashioned sweat pants. Maybe it's the
way the hem of the pants curves down across the instep just a
bit more than other pants; maybe the shorter waist and the
flimsier fabric creates a smoother outline. The fact is, a
nice pair of yoga pants can make you feel well-dressed when
you're barely dressed at all. Look for bootcut legs and a
waist that isn't overemphasized. Yoga pants should not come
all the way up to your waist, but should sit slightly below
it. Wear with a wrap over yoga top or a long tank: most women
should avoid the urge to wear cropped tops with these pants. See more yogo workout pants >>
